About Me

I am Subish S, an alumni from Wildlife Institute of India with 13 plus years’ experience in Wildlife Conservation @ Ecotourism. A Nature enthusiast, who believes in the potential of Responsible and Sustainable Tourism for bringing community oriented conservation.

Subish S has completed his MA Communication from Bharathiyar University and another post- graduation in MSc Wildlife Science from Wildlife Institute of India. In his Master dissertation, he did an assessment on the recreational value of Periyar tiger reserve and how ecotourism is influencing the conservational attitude of local communities. After his graduation, he was actively working with local communities and has even developed a sustainable tourism model concept called Monsoon Retreats Ecostay for promoting local biodiversity conservation in 2013. He was also instrumental in forming a conversation oriented tourism organization called the Living Earth. It is a responsible travel enterprise, committed to setup a replicable model of climate resilient community conservation. With less harmful construction techniques, it established a carbon neutral Eco stay in an agroecosystem that ensures organic farming, food security, multiple livelihood options, conservation of native flora and fauna, living lab facility while supporting local community. The Living Earth has joined hands with a number of agricultural farms, farm-stays, homestays and resorts and helping them to convert into sustainable properties following the Eco stay model. In these properties, firstly, biodiversity assessments are initiated with the help of owners and volunteers and data is entered on India biodiversity portal, a partner of the Living Earth; secondly, apiculture is initiated to enhance bee diversity and crop yield meanwhile giving the box ownership and respective income away to destitute women in the local community; thirdly, orchid friendly tourism, an initiative to conserve native orchids through setting up orchid trails are being done. He has designed a river conservation tourism package for learning, conservation and restoration of river Periyar with local communities throughout the course of river.

Our Mission

At Monsoon Retreats Ecostay, we are committed to promoting responsible tourism that respects nature and supports local communities. Our mission is to provide unforgettable travel experiences while ensuring the preservation of wildlife and natural habitats.

What we stand for?

The Model envisages the basic principle of sustainable tourism by implementing the concept of living in harmony with nature through regenerative tourism with active participation of stakeholders at

grassroot level through ecosystem restoration aimed at biodiversity conservation and the promotion of low-carbon tourism practices. Implementation of various components of this conservation-

oriented tourism can be traced from the number of properties (homestays and farm stays), who adapted such practise in various tourism destinations at Idukki district. This hybridised eco cum Agro tourism model highlights the importance of microhabitat for various fauna and flora. This refugia

concept can boost various ecotourism practises like bird watching, afforestation, organic farming, apiculture, herpetofauna tourism along with butterfly and dragon fly watch etc and thereby the unit serves as a vital conservation centre of significant ecological value. The model not only act as mere lodging unit but also portrays as a dynamic knowledge hub for

promoting biodiversity conservation. Our activities and programs are designed to engage both visitors and local communities to learn and update themselves on various ecosystem services. Through workshops, webinars, educational programs, and hands-on experiences, guests gain a deeper understanding of environmental issues and learn practical ways to contribute to positive change. This innovative model not only promotes environmental stewardship but also fosters a sense of connection and responsibility among travellers and residents. By integrating conservation principles into everyday practices and experiences, these units empower individuals to make meaningful contributions to the well-being of the planet.

Projects envisaged

At this current phase, Monsoon Retreats is dedicated to species recovery programs, including the establishment of an amphibian conservation park aimed at raising awareness about the ecological and economic significance of amphibians and creating an ecosystem conducive to their thriving in human-modified landscapes. Our collaboration with the San Diego County Orchid Society for the conservation of endemic orchids through Orchid Friendly Tourism initiative, With Wildlife Trust of India for the species recovery program for amphibian conservation, promoting natives honey bee for

pollination and association with the Responsible Tourism Mission Kerala for promoting ethical and sustainable tourism highlights our commitment towards nature conservation.

What we intend to achieve

The Western Ghats, renowned as a biodiversity hotspot, faces substantial threats due to rapid and unscientific infrastructure development, forest encroachment, land use changes, and extensive pesticide use. As a result, our biodiversity is undergoing a dramatic decline, with many endemic

species now classified as threatened. Given the global significance of our mission, community- oriented conservation efforts like ours are crucial for preserving the diversity and vibrancy of our planet. By fostering a deeper connection to nature and promoting sustainable practices, we aim to create a more resilient and harmonious relationship between humanity and the environment. The model initiative plays a pivotal role in environmental conservation along with other sustainable development goals and can be easily replicated in other homestays and farm stays across the region. In the Era of Climate change and species loss, this responsible tourism initiative has the potential to convert each tourism units as a refugia for local biodiversity and the host community as the ambassador for local biodiversity conservation and tourism or clients as a channel to support such noble conservation efforts.

    Welcome

“Environmentally responsible travel and visitation to relatively undisturbed natural areas, in order to enjoy and appreciate nature (and any accompanying cultural features, both past and present) that promotes conservation, has low negative visitor's impact and provide for beneficially active socio-economic involvement of local population.” -IUCN, 96

That's why ecotourism is considered to be an important tool for attaining Millennium Development Goal. But what happens when an ecologically fragile landscape become famous? A good number of outside players (Resort groups) start their own venture, thus taking away a major share of income which otherwise will be a part of the local economy. This kind of leakage leads to the draining of local economy, directly affecting the socio economic stability of local communities. In ecotourism, linkages and leakages acts as an indicator to check the involvement of local community regarding their empowerment, involvement in capacity building, awareness, strength of their institution and their socio-economic conditions. The ultimate aim of sustainable tourism is to strengthen the network of biodiversity conservation.

Majority of locals residing in the outskirts of protected areas have agriculture as their primary occupation. Monsoon plays an important role is shaping agriculture landscape both spatial and in temporal scale. If Monsoon is good, harvest will be plenty, thereby directly leading to the socio-economic well-being of the local community; but if rainfall is in excess or deficit, farmers will have to pay a huge price. In order to overcome such situation and to upgrade their socio-economic status, it's important to empower the local communities in various ecotourism programs with sustainable development in a landscape like Periyar Tiger Reserve where tourism is the leading factor.

Monson Retreats is a model concept where we try to blend the architectural design in such a way that it hardly hinders the aesthetic as well as biological diversity of the area. All cottages stands at a height of 10 to 15 feet above the ground making it possible for all farming community to concentrate on agriculture without wasting even a cent of agricultural land in the name of tourism infrastructure but at the same time, earn some additional financial benefits from tourism. In other words, we try to blend agro with ecotourism, that too in sustainable way. Thus avoiding depletion of land in the name of resorts or home stays which otherwise can be used for agricultural production. Sustainability with minimum negative impact on the nature is the basic need of the hour.

Amazing Stay in a limited budget.

Beautiful homestay in an amazing location with best services, definitely recommend. The rooms

were very well maintained and washrooms, hygienic. Food was very tasty and they ensured they

check with us on our food needs before the food time. The proprietor being a wildlife

conservationist had a great knowledge on the places around thekkady and he ensured we had a

great time for a day's time we had to spend in thekkady. He provided the best suggestions to make

our stay worthwhile. Must visit property.

    Ms Manasa, Mumbai

Surreal Destination for a Weekend Getaway

We walked into this place feeling surreal. Although situated in Kumily town, Monsoon Retreat is

truly an Eco stay surrounded by lush green and elevated cottages to mirror tree houses preserving

the flora and fauna of the place. The steps to the cottages are a bit steep and can be a challenge for

aged people. As a sustainable enterprise, they provided us with essential amenities and delicious food. This is a place for nature enthusiasts and not for someone seeking luxury. The bathroom was clean, and the rooms were spacious, accommodating 3 pax. We have to let them know in advance regarding the

time and choice of menu for our meal inorder for them to serve us hot. The staff Mr. Murali and his

team were kind and helpful. The owner Mr. Subish, a wildlife conservationist, took care of all our

needs from welcoming us till our departure. We had messaged him before we actually made the

booking and he was very helpful in clarifying our doubts and letting us know how to plan our other

activities. The location is close to Periyar Tiger Reserve hence an ideal place to stay for those planning on

adventurous activities. This is a place for those seeking out peace and harmony from our otherwise monotonous routine.

Awesome Stay and great services with friendly host

This is one of the most amazing stay I have ever experienced. I have stayed in resorts and budget

hotels in my trips, but this stay was something completely new for me. Do not miss this stay if you

are visiting Thekkady. They have limited rooms available, but the idea of planning this kind of stay without removing any trees or plants and the efforts that Subish has taken to build this is really appreciable. The atmosphere is so good, hence you will surely feel a stress free holiday away from

your normal routine life. They provide homemade food for breakfast, and also provide us dinner on request for an extra charge. Their coffee is too good and very addictive, so fair warning. If you are a family\couple\sole traveler and want to have a different holiday stay along with nature, I would surely recommend this place. They also help us in guiding the tours and visits to different  places around Thekkady. Unlike other lodges or chain of hotels, this place is completely maintained and hosted by one family who encourage eco tourism at Thekkady and they do it with passion that is clearly felt. We had no regrets in choosing this stay and would definitely recommend.

    A Best Refreshing Nature Stay

Its time to write up a little long review about Monsoon Retreats Ecostay, Thekkady. That we went in

April 2021,as 13members of our family. From welcoming till we check out all the guidance was given

by property owner cum wildlife researcher Subish. That was really great and we had special tea

made from organic spices taken from same place(Because the stay is inside the Cardomom Field)

was just awesome. It is basically a treehouse stay with separate dining hall. It was not a hotel food

but we had a nice home cooked breakfast and dinner, its really really Good try there. Heard and felt

the dev drops on nights, if u are a nature lover or planning for a very refreshing stay then you will

love the Natures sound it;s a gifted nature stay. And Subish;s guidance for sight seeing plans and

arrangements was excellent, because we don't know anything in Thekkady before. And here in

thekkady if we won;t start earlier in the morning we will miss out more things, if we miss the time

Subish will watsapp us like;its time to go bro;. I didn;t see anyone before like this much caring. In

our stay we had campfires, barbecues. This is fully a nature based stay with nature sounds. So,

definitely it is a must try stay if u are planning for Thekkady Vacation.

    Mr Ramsadeesh, Pondicherry

    Heavenly abode

Mr. Subish, a dedicated nature worker and lover, created a piece of heaven on Earth. Just come and

stay in this pure energy field and come out refreshed and relaxed. Mr. Subish organized a full-day

trip to surrounding eco farms and eco tea plantations which was very revealing. Learn about his unique ideas and work done for the protection of the jungle. Food was made with eco ingredients only and with great care and love. They have a very nice yoga hall.

Perfect Place to Stay in Thekkady

Monsoon is very close to the main attractions in Thekkady--the tiger reserve, elephant rides, Ayurvedic garden tours, but is located in a tranquil forest that feels very far away from the hustle and bustle of town. Unlike too many other lodgings in the area, it takes eco-tourism seriously, eschewing plastic bottles and preserving its surrounding habitat. The delightful cabins on stilts afford great opportunities for birdwatching. But the best part of the experience is talking to the owner, Subish, whose knowledge of local wildlife biology and ecology is extensive. His efforts to make tourism and forest management in Kerala more sustainable are truly inspirational.

    Mr Josh H, California

Eco retreat by name and nature

This place and its host were really wonderful and the perfect way to authentically experience the

jungle. Despite being told by our host Subish that he doesnt specialise in hospitality, we received an

incredibly warm welcome and were well looked after our entire stay. In fact, Subishs actual

specialisation in ecology and wildlife helped us to understand more than we would have done and

he has used these principles in building Monsoon Retreats. The rooms and surroundings were

amazing and so close to nature without in any way disrupting it. We absolutely loved our stay and

our jungle jeep day around Periyar, not to mention the nighttime jungle trek where we saw some

wild elephants and plenty of other amazing creatures!
